We were trying to figure out where to play, and the more we looked, the more obvious it became how difficult golf courses can be to describe. How much water is “a little bit” when someone in Florida is describing a course to a friend in Oklahoma? How tight is a “tight” fairway? How wide is “wide open”? One golfer’s intimidating carry may barely register to another.
Scorecards, photos, reviews, satellite imagery and course websites can all tell you something, but descriptions are subjective and still leave a lot to the imagination.
Video takes away much of that guesswork.
If a picture is worth a thousand words, how many is a video worth?
Net Double Bogey is being built to give golfers a better way to see and understand a course before they decide where to play.
The course
comes first.
I’ve played golf for most of my life, and I try to film courses in a way another golfer might actually appreciate.
The goal isn’t simply to produce a collection of pretty aerial shots. It’s to show how the golf course actually looks, how the holes fit together and what you can expect when you get there.
Net Double Bogey isn’t a course-ranking site, and I’m not trying to tell anyone whether a course is good, bad, easy, difficult or worth playing.
The goal is much simpler: present the course in a neutral and useful way and let golfers make that decision for themselves.
I don’t have a financial interest in making one course look better than another or presenting a property as something it isn’t.
The course is the subject.
Net Double Bogey isn’t being built around a personality, giveaways, stunts or whatever happens to generate the most subscribers this week.
There’s plenty of golf content built around the person in front of the camera. That isn’t what I’m trying to create here.
I want the usefulness of the library to be the reason people come back.
Just honest golf.
That doesn’t mean I’ll never become a more visible part of the site. Over time, I’d like to use Net Double Bogey to present useful golf information in ways that are both entertaining and informative, while keeping the focus where it belongs: on the game, the courses and the people who make golf what it is.
More than a
collection of videos.
The long-term goal is much larger than a collection of videos.
I want Net Double Bogey to become a useful resource for golfers across the country and eventually a one-stop place for planning your own golf trip.
The course map is being designed with that in mind.
Maybe you want to see what courses are near where you’re staying.
Maybe you’re trying to increase your lifetime course count.
Maybe you want to plan a trip around courses designed by the same architect.
Or maybe you simply found a course you’ve never heard of and want to see what it looks like before spending the money and making the drive.
The idea is to make finding, seeing and comparing golf courses easier.
